The Composition I and II classes are taught by Dr. Rich Raymond, Chairman of the UALR Rhetoric and Writing Department, and Ms. Joan Gage, Hall teacher who has taught these courses at UALR for many years. Dr. Raymond received the Excellence in Teaching Award for his college, and Ms. Gage is a past recipient of the Stephens Award.
The texts and course work were the same as for composition courses offered on the UALR campus. During Composition I, students learned to develop their ideas in multi draft essays. Much of the class work was carried out in cooperative learning groups where students analyzed their own and other' writing. In Composition II, the main emphasis is in learning skills for research and writing about the results of research. Hall students visited the UALR Ottenheimer Library where they were given an introductory lecture and tour; then students spent the rest of the afternoon researching topics in the library.
By the end of the semester, over thirty Hall juniors and seniors received six hours of credit for college composition. Our success can best be summed up by senior Louis Scivally, "Taking Composition I and II was one of by best choices concerning my high school courses. The atmosphere of the University School makes the transition from high school to college seem easier. I am glad that I started college early!"
