For the past few years, our nation has experienced a decline in the number of minority students who obtain teaching certificates. At the same time, the number of minority school-age children increases, and in certain school districts, the minorities have become the majority. If demographic projections are correct, this trend will continue. Few minority children who complete their high school education have followed a college preparatory curriculum, and a small number pursue postsecondary education.
Teachers of Tomorrow has been created in response to the declining number of minority teachers. This program is designed to:
Recruit students into the teaching profession
Help students, in agreement with their parents, take more responsibility
for their education
Expect high academic achievement from students and support their effort, as
indicated in A Nation at Risk
Educate students and others on the benefits of a career in education
Provide students an opportunity to honor classroom teachers
Provide hands-on experience to prospective teachers
Help students reach college
