What is the University School Program?
It is a partnership between UALR and Hall High School. Under this program, the University and Hall High agree to help students accelerate their progress toward a college degree. Students who select this option can take transferable college courses while still in high school. In the 2003-2004 school year, fourteen courses will be taught on the Hall campus. UALR and Hall faculty will collaborate in the delivery of instruction. Students may also enroll in courses on the UALR campus.

Why was the University School program developed?
The public wants to see high schools and colleges work closely together to reduce the time students take to complete a college degree. Such cooperation can reduce the costs of college degrees and conserve scarce state resources. This program may give confidence to students who otherwise might feel the challenges of college work would be intimidating. The University School at Hall High will develop a seamless web of relationships between UALR and Hall students.

How do students benefit? Early Planning. This program encourages early planning for college attendance. Colleges have found that the earlier students plan for college the more likely they are to earn a college degree. Preparation for college involves careful selection of courses no later than ninth grade. This program involves students, high school counselors and teachers, and parents in the selection of courses from the beginning of the high school career.

Rigorous Studies. Besides early planning, this program encourages students to pursue a rigorous course of study in high school. The best preparation for college is a high school program of study designed for college bound students.

Can college courses taken at Hall be transferred?
Yes. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock is a fully accredited institution of higher education whose credits are routinely accepted by other accredited colleges and universities across the nation. UALR officials will assist students who wish to seek information from another institution regarding the transferability of specific course credits.

What will the costs be for the college courses?
The costs of operating the program will be shared by both the university and the high school and will be revised from year to year. Every student will receive a grant-in-aid equal to approximately one-half the regular tuition costs.

How does a student participate in the program?
Hall juniors and seniors who seek admission to the University School must meet the entrance requirements of UALR:

Completion of at least 50% of the state recommended college preparatory courses with a minimum of a 2.5 GPA OR minimum overall high school GPA of 3.0 OR minimum of 21 ACT score. Students enrolling in composition or math must submit ACT scores and will be required to take placement tests prior to registering for the course(s).
