Thanks so much for visiting our site! Please take time to browse through all the information here because there are many, many good things to learn about Henderson Magnet Middle School! Whether you are have a child at Henderson, or are considering Henderson in the future, this site will be a valuable resource for you.

Our mission is to provide a total educational experience for all of our students. An excellent teaching staff and a dedicated support staff make our school second to none. We also have a strong discipline program, and students know they must behave in order to be successful here. A positive school climate is a main focus, and we work to make sure each child feels safe, happy, and excited to be at Henderson. School spirit is stressed, and we take measures every day to instill school pride in our students.

Our Health Sciences Magnet program will be another focus this year as we give students a look at health-related careers and also give them some practical experience in these areas. Our AVID program will be growing, still promoting study skills, such as Cornell note-taking, in order to give students the confidence to be successful in high school and college.

Academic enrichment is available in our after-school program as well as morning tutoring. We give our students the help they need. In addition to using the Little Rock School District’s curriculum, all teachers at Henderson use the America’s Choice School Design model. This teaching model strongly engages the student, and it increases learning. As proof, Henderson’s test scores saw much improvement last year. Our plan is to see even more dramatic growth in 2009-2010.

Are you interested in Henderson? Please call the office and set up a time to visit us. If you’re already a Henderson parent, thanks for entrusting your child to us! This school year promises to be full of excitement, and our goal is that this excitement will result not only from those thrilling middle school extracurricular activities, but also from the joy of achieving academic success! The Henderson Hawks are choosing success this year. Come join us!

Principal's Book of the Month

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

Stargirl is about this very unusual girl who enters a new school after being homeschooled. She isn't like any of the other girls. She carries around a ukelele on her back and sings in the lunchroom everyday. When she starts showing up at the football games (which no one goes to), everyone starts coming too. Finally, she becomes an official cheerleader for the school and now, never stops cheering. She cheers for everyone; the spectators out of the cheerleader's usual area, the parents at the hot dog stand, even the opposing team. Her cheering, however, is what eventually gets her into trouble.

When MAHS's basketball team loses after the longest winning streak in the history of the school, they blame their lose on Stargirl. Everyone except Dori Dilson (Stargirl’s friend) and Leo turn Stargirl down. They avoid her in the halls and they don’t even make eye contact with her. It’s like she doesn’t exist. Leo likes her for who she is and that’s why they soon start dating. Then, Leo asked her to change and become normal. Only because she loves him sooo much, she does and the next day Stargirl disappears. In her place is an average girl Susan Caraway. But Susan doesn't like the change and so she changes back to her normal, unnormal self. After the school dance, in which Stargirl lead the Bunny Hop, she was never seen nor heard from again.
