Music program one of the best
Music Specialist Kayren Baker has a special relationship with the children, and it is evident by the respect they show her every day at Gibbs. Baker has been teaching music and music appreciation for over 20 years. While many schools are cutting their music programs - Gibbs continues to add to its program.
Each year, Baker choreographs, adapts music, and writes scripts for four plays that the children star in - an evening performance and an encore performance the following day in the cafetorium. Each child has an opportunity to participate in these plays.
The work requires countless hours beside those that are spent in the classroom, but Baker never seems to mind the extra work. In addition, Baker brings special programs to the children each year - including opera - to help children develop an appreciation for all the different genres of music. Children find success in music, success that builds confidence. That confidence leads to greater academic achievement.
Children at Gibbs attend two thirty minute music classes each week - and spend several hours rehearsing for their performances. The hard shows as the children shine at every performance each year. To see pictures of our 2002-2003 performances, please see our photo galleries.
