The gift of teaching our young artists One of the first things you notice when you walk into the art room at Gibbs is the enthusiasm of the teacher as she beckons you inside to see the wonderful creative projects the students are making this week. That teacher is Susan Turner Purvis, an art specialist who has been teaching for 32 years, and manages to be excited about what she is doing every day. Under Purvis' watchful eye, Gibbs group art project was selected for display in the Young Arkansas Artists Exhibit - and this year was the sixteenth consecutive year for that honor. Students in Purvis' room paint, draw, and mold clay figurines which are fired in a kiln and hand painted. It's obvious the contribution that Purvis makes to the students of Gibbs - their artwork is painted on every wall and in every corner throughout the school. Every teacher at Gibbs will tell you that one of the things that makes Gibbs excellent school is the great teachers that occupy our building. Teachers like Purvis, who are still excited about teaching children 32 years later. |
