Accelerated Reader Shows Students' Love of Reading Pays Off

Technically, Accelerated Reader is a computerized reading management program. But for students at Gibbs Magnet, the accelerated reader is a chance to set and meet goals in reading, all while earning prizes and having fun. The program is administered by Kay Lavey, Media Specialist at Gibbs.

The Accelerated Reader has a proven track record for improving test scores, developing a love of reading in students, and teaching children to become lifelong learners and critical thinkers. Each nine weeks, students set "point" goals. The students select the books they want to read, then after reading, take a quiz to earn points. Points are determined by the grade level and length of the book, as well as the number of correct answers on the quiz.

In this way, students are encouraged to read materials at higher grade levels, because those books will be worth more points. Students are permitted to spend their points four times during the year in the Accelerated Reader Store, which is located in the Media Center.

Parents can help their students to become lifelong readers by reading to their child, reading with their child, and by encouraging their child to read independently each day to their parents and siblings.
